About Company

The "Gerontechnology Research Center" at Yuan Ze University was established in 2003, pioneering research and development in the field of gerontechnology in Taiwan and earning an international reputation. As shown in Figure 1, in 2015, the center collaborated with Wellcare, a renowned domestic bedding manufacturer, to implement the Ministry of Economic Affairs' "Industry-Academia-Research Value Creation Program." Under the program's requirements, a startup company, Wellcare Gerontechnology Co., Ltd. (hereinafter referred to as "Wellcare GT"), was founded in April 2016. After the program concluded at the end of 2017, Wellcare GT officially began operations, with Yuan Ze University holding a partial stake in the company. Wellcare GT is dedicated to developing smart care products to achieve "precision" elderly care. Having been in operation for over eight years, the company has successfully transitioned beyond the startup phase, establishing a mature product line and team. In 2024, its revenue reached nearly NT$19 million, steadily progressing toward sustainable growth. In 2020, SEDA G-Tech CO., LTD. implemented the Ministry of Economic Affairs' Technology Research and Development Project, the "AI Startup Pilot Program," to develop the comprehensive third-generation WhizPad Smart Bed Care System (as shown in Figure 2). This system has become the company's flagship product, holding eight domestic and international patents. Launched over three years ago, the third-generation system has been deployed in 35 medical institutions and care facilities, with a total of 4,620 beds in actual use. It has also received prestigious recognitions, including the 2022 Taiwan Excellence Award and the 2023 Taiwan Long-Term Care Assistive Device Rental Excellence Award.

Product Info

(1) The most fundamental requirement of a mattress is to provide a comfortable sleeping experience. Many smart mattress products are developed by first designing sensor technology and then seeking mattress manufacturers for integration. However, WhizPad takes a completely different design approach. From the beginning, it was developed in collaboration with Wellcare, a premium Taiwanese mattress manufacturer. Unlike traditional smart mattresses, WhizPad contains no electronic components inside the mattress itself. Instead, Wellcare's high-quality foam material is engineered into a pressure-sensitive sensing layer, seamlessly integrated into the mattress. Beyond its smart capabilities, WhizPad ensures exceptional comfort, conforming to the user’s body shape for optimal support and pressure relief. Clinical research conducted by a leading Taiwanese medical center has demonstrated that WhizPad significantly reduces the incidence of pressure injuries, with results published in an international journal. According to the 2022 Taiwan Patient Safety Reporting System Annual Report, falls were the second most reported hospital safety incidents (22.2%, second only to medication errors). Among hospital patient falls, the most common activity at the time of the incident was "getting in and out of bed" (20.9%). Traditional bed-exit alarms are often used for fall prevention, but these typically have a small coverage area, leading to false alarms. Additionally, caregivers are often alerted only after the patient has already left the bed, making timely intervention difficult. WhizPad’s smart functionality is designed to address this issue at its core. As shown in Figure 3, the entire mattress is embedded with 30 pressure-sensing zones (5×6 grid). Using machine learning algorithms, WhizPad can accurately determine the user’s bed posture, detecting whether they are lying down, sitting up, sitting at the edge, or if the bed is empty. Through an IoT framework, real-time posture data is displayed on nursing station monitors or mobile apps. To further enhance fall prevention, WhizPad includes a three-stage voice alert system, triggering progressive bed-exit warnings (sit-up, edge-of-bed, and bed exit). This allows caregivers to anticipate patient movements and provide timely assistance, reducing the risk of falls before they happen.

(2) WhizToys is a modular, interlocking activity-sensing mat that can be assembled into various shapes, such as a basic 3×3 grid or an expanded 9×3 sports field layout. WhizToys connects to an app via Bluetooth, allowing users to engage in cognitive training, physical activities, competitions/cooperative games, and functional assessments simply by walking or stepping on the mat. The game app provides a multi-sensory experience through visuals, lights, and music. Caregivers or trainers can customize the game type and difficulty level based on the user’s condition and abilities. Additionally, the app serves as a customizable game development platform, enabling modifications based on personal experiences and cultural backgrounds. The app also features account login functionality, storing gameplay results in the cloud for future evaluation and analysis.

The product is designed around three key principles:
1. Multifaceted interaction, integrating exercise, cognition, social engagement, and multi-sensory stimulation.
2. Customizability, allowing users to select or design games that suit their needs, experiences, and difficulty levels.
3. Meaningful data generation, recording valuable medical and healthcare-related insights through gameplay.
