Residential noise can be categorized into airborne sound and impact sound, with the former often dominated by aftermarket cheaper foam or fiber products to attenuate sound. In contrast, impact sound relies on damping effects, and thus quality crumb rubber becomes the main ingredient. Traditionally, rubber mats are manufactured by compressing crumb rubber, curing, and finally slicing and finishing. The process is labor intensive, often involves hazardous chemicals, and does not allow much variation in the physical characteristics of the final product.
